the nekomata

to be honest, i didn’t think i’d meet my goal of having him done by the end of the month because this last week i’ve spent more playing video games and less sculpting… i couldn’t help it with the release of the ratchet and clank movie finally happening, i binged on lombaxes ^^;;;

but here he is – the nekomata. he’s a companion for the kitsune for an upcoming show. in japanese mythology, there are several kinds of cat based yokai. one of the older and more evil is the nekomata. however, over time the nekomata and the bake-neko (a somewhat less evil cat yokai) started to take on similar traits and appearances, with both being described as a cat with two tails that could walk upright like a person.

this boy is actually based on one of my actual cats, who is CONSTANTLY getting into trouble and harassing the other kitties.

so this week i finished up two commissions – an angry red kasa-obake and a white resin kirin. i was pretty much given free rein on both and decided to do them as a set. i also made the kirin’s black wig, and while it’s not perfect, i’m pretty happy with the results.

this time i also decided to play around a bit, and go with a white background and sort of pumped up the lights/whites in the pictures. so hopefully they don’t appear washed out?

sorry, the sherlockian in me couldn’t help it…

it was time to trim another orchid and i had managed to get some lovely purple artichokes at the grocery store, so of course it was time for a photoshoot!

it’s kame again – though i really should take her apart and sand her smooth and what not… sigh…

i recently had to trim the stalk of one of my orchids, and it also happened to be at a time when i was finishing up the sculpting on a doll who’s going to be part of an upcoming show.

i still have to finish one of her shoes and sanding her smooth and painting and wigging and clothing… but here’s my lovely little kitsune. she doesn’t have a name really, but she’s a lot of fun to have around.

the lantern…

wow, 3 posts in a week’s time!

well, actually life was not going so well this morning and to cheer myself up i decided to pull out my little lovers and photograph them with a lantern i had purchased recently.

and a few other shots that didn’t seem to fit with those… i’m still learning how to get the colors correct with the rich red tone of pestilence…

i've been drawing for as long as i could hold a pencil and art became my first language. though i've only been sculpting since 2007, i fell in love with the idea of being able to bring my drawings to life. i am heavily inspired by medieval macabre artwork, japanese yokai, and oddly enough, sherlock holmes. currently i'm living just south of beautiful portland oregon ^^
