a small side-step

October 27th, 2015 by _d2_

once again, i seemed to have decided that october is my “sketch a day” month – funny since this year i heard it’s also referred to as “inktober” – not that i do pen and ink…

anyway – looking for ideas i remembered a conversation i had with my dear friend – see, we’re both fans of TMNT, and while i like mikey and raph, she rather likes donnie (and leo, so we’ve got all four covered). but sadly, there’s a dearth of donatello-centric stuff (posters, shirts, bric-a-brac of all sorts). so i decided to try and help fill the void with a month of donnie fan-art.

only one problem – before the 2014 movie and the current series on nick, i hadn’t really payed attention to him (and then, i really only paid attention to him in the recent movie because those glasses made him super cute, and in the new series because he’s voiced by one of my favorite voice actors, rob paulsen – ooooh, that dreamy bedroom voice of throttle’s is to die for! )

so i must admit, i felt way out of my league tackling a character that is well known, and at the same time, rather obscure to me. and not being mechanically inclined myself, i knew i was going to have a HUGE handicap…

so i started the month trying to copy styles and personalities of other interpretations… to say the least, it didn’t go all that well, though i managed to get a few decent bits. after about halfway through the month i decided to say f**k it and started playing around – and while the book has become super eclectic and random, i’m finally starting having fun with the character. and while many of them are still rough sketches, i have a few mentally marked that i want to redo as a more finished piece.

but i still managed to get a few pieces i like, and with the remaining days i hope to gain a few more.

((btw – if you haven’t read it, i totally recommend “the dragons of eden” by carl sagan – awesome book))

some more sketching

just some random pieces to help keep me going – i seem to have a thing against clothing it seems…

and then there’s this piece – waaaaaaay back when, i had thought that i would sculpt dolls to use as my models for my art… but it got lost along the way. recently i rediscovered the idea and i’m definitely re-inspired.

so using one of my favorite photos of pestilence and plague, i started this piece –

some 2D work

so i took the last couple of days to focus on my real passion – drawing. i love sculpting too, but i started out as a 2D artist and it’s what i’m most comfortable doing and it helps me relax. if i sculpt too long, i just burn out and i think i hit that point last week.

and during those few days, i managed to discover my style – it only took 30 years…

anyway – i’m hoping next year to do more 2D art and connect it to what i’m sculpting.

so here are the few sketches i’ve done – they’re not done, obviously, but i plan on redoing them on a larger scale.

two new face

i’ve finished these two girls, who will soon be up for sale. i’m hoping to continue making these one-offs or very small run dolls to offer for sale as i work on my skills and learn new ones (it is, after all, a never ending process)

i didn’t think i would finish them because my personal life has been so chaotic lately and trying to get everything done has become so overwhelming…. there were entire days where i just froze up, unsure where to start or what to do.

both of these girls use the xiang body as a basis – so they’re only about… 23cm tall? they may be a little bit taller or shorter since i resculpted the feet to have shoes and i haven’t actually measured them yet…

first one i’ve been calling lune. and yeah, actually she’s probably closer to 30cm tall with that head of hers…

the second one is actually a custom xiang, currently being called “bella xiang” though if that name stays or not i’m not sure… she was supposed to have cute little hearts for the heels of her shoes, but in these pictures they look more like bloody fangs… sigh… so now i have to rethink my color choice.

about

i've been drawing for as long as i could hold a pencil and art became my first language. though i've only been sculpting since 2007, i fell in love with the idea of being able to bring my drawings to life. i am heavily inspired by medieval macabre artwork, japanese yokai, and oddly enough, sherlock holmes. currently i'm living just south of beautiful portland oregon ^^
