this boy came about after watching waaaaaaaaaay too much TMNT while working on other projects. throw in some samurai troopers/ronin warriors and… well, you get the idea.

i’d love to do a second one more true to the shredder’s look named kurokabuto (yep, i’m a big fan)

so, he started out like this:

and then i shared the idea with my mom prepared for her to laugh at me. instead, she fell head over heels in love with it and begged to be allowed to sculpt it. knowing that the two of us have MASSIVELY different styles and that even if we did work from the same picture we’d end up with extremely different things, i told her to go for it. i was really curious to see what she could come up with.

i, on the other hand, had simply planned to set the drawing aside while i finished some other projects… but her enthusiasm got me thinking about it all the time, and then when she sent me the first couple of pics of her beginning i just got itching to try my hand at it.

of course – when she started sharing pics people kept gushing over her brilliance and creative idea… sigh… so now i have a fear that i’ll look like a copy-cat, even though she did keep saying she was using my drawing and my ideas for it (and yes, i know honestly that it’s sort of copying other peoples ideas since he was inspired by pre-existing characters and not something i just pulled out of my own head)

well, in the matter of just a few days i had gotten this far:

some parts were sticking close to the drawing, others were taking on an organic life of their own… he was becoming quite insectoid and less.. mechanical armor-ish. i may change things up and get him back to the smooth lines of the armor as i work more details into him

and well – that’s that on the catch-up posts. i’ve made progress on both pestilence and the shirokabuto since these pictures, i just haven’t really taken any new pics…

this boy isn’t a new idea – he was created at the same time i drew up plague (geeze… what, 4 years ago? 5? something like that… )

since i’m hoping to have my own table next year at spectrum (well, me and my mom if things go right) i need to have more dolls completed to put on it. and as plague was well received – along with a ton of begging from my mom – i started pestilence.

he’s the second of a set of 3: plague (crow/raven), pestilence (condor), and the yet-to-be-started omen (albatross). originally i saw them as all being the same age/level (if gods have ages? ) but as he’s come together, he feels much older, and perhaps a bit weary. the only thing he doesn’t look is like a condor ><#### somehow i've ended up with a weird terrorbird mash up… but i'm still working on his head and hoping i can get it looking a bit more… modern… the skull ended up so large, that i knew if i didn't do something, he would be a giant compared to plague and omen. so i started to play around with a hunch:

about this point i started seeing him as being really old and rather than decaying skeleton like plague, perhaps more… mummy-ish.

as i fully embraced the idea of him being desiccated rather than decayed, i started looking for pics of various peat bog mummies and gained a TON of inspirations and ideas. though the carving has been slow going, i’m loving how this old geezer is coming together

the first kaiju: mai ougi

June 20th, 2015 by _d2_

there aren’t a lot of progress pics on this girl as i sped through her to get her done to take to spectrum back in the end of may. she wasn’t a rushed idea, so much as i just got into a strong creative groove and kept working on her.

she’s called the “mai ougi” (great fan in japanese and refers to the older name given to the large fans used during traditional japanese dances). she’s the first of several kaiju inspired dolls i hope to do.

what are kaiju? they’re japanese monster movies ~ which i grew up watching and loving. godzilla, mothra, rodan, gamera – they’re not the creme de la creme of movies, but i still love them. though i’m sure most people hear the word and think “pacific rim!” since that’s what they named the aliens – and i’ll admit, the creature designs i’ve seen look interesting, but i haven’t seen it as it just feels like a mash up of “just about any anime about mecha” and “just about any japanese kaiju movie” so… yeah…

anyway – the mai ougi is actually a reinterpretation of guiron, an adversarial kaiju from gamera’s universe. you’d never think it from the idea sketch i did:

and with that sitting beside me as i worked, i pounded her out:

these pics were literally a day or so before it was time to leave for spectrum – where she was a HUGE hit much to my surprise. since these pics, her back arms have gained an extra segment so they’re even longer and curl around to her front, and she’s been prepped for molds as i have hopes to offer a couple up for sale (not many since she’s a special idea for me and i predict a complicated doll to cast in flumo… )

i had also wanted to carve the flower design in her blade, but my skills aren’t to that point. so it will be hand drawn/painted on each girl. she’ll also be getting little mini tassels for the back of her blade and each shoulder spike.

feeling spread thin…

it’s silly because by modern social media standards, i have very few accounts… but the truth is, trying to keep this blog, my facebook, and now the official cirque de fantomes website up to date – i feel like i’m forgetting to post in all sorts of places!

like i’ve started 3 new dolls – and NONE have made it here to this blog! in fact one is in the prep-work for molding and i don’t think i’ve posted any pics of her up here… maybe i mentioned her?

the other two are more recent additions – but neither have been posted here either.

so i’m hoping to change that in the next day or so – be prepared for a crap-load of disjointed, blurry in process pics of some dolls! i wish i could find some time to take some studio shots, but i’m still rather busy for awhile longer.

though some time is freed up with xiang now up on the etsy shop – we’ll see if there’s any takers ^^;;;; i had hoped she would be unique, but still with the right kind of appeal. though if she doesn’t i already have some plans to play around with some of the casts i’ve started to make anyway ~_^

and on top of that – trying to get 3 more classes written up with my mom since the mochi class proved to be a success (that’s been the second biggest eater of my time right now…) you wouldn’t believe how much effort and time it takes to write down things that you just do routinely… i don’t even think about most of the steps i take when i sculpt or draw – i just do it. but now i’m forced to stop and think of how to put in words, make sure i take all the right pictures, and pray that i don’t forget something (though inevitably i do… )

so once again – though i’ve been sharing a few pics here and there, my silence doesn’t mean that nothing is happening – au contraire mon ami! 3 classes, 3 new dolls, 1 doll in production, and i just started a HUGE piece of artwork (don’t laugh – 14×17 is big by my standards) – and if i can start squeezing them in, i have 3 OOAK resin kirins in the works as well.

the elephant is here!

after some struggling i got her all done, and posted sales info to the newly started announcement email list, and will soon have her updated on the news section of the cirque de fantomes site as well!

i’ll admit – there were a lot of tears near the end as stress over came me, but i’m glad i pushed through it. i just hope others will see her as being worth something too!

anyway – she officially goes up for sale on etsy on the 20th of this month, and in the mean time i’ll be chugging away at a few other dolls that i don’t think i’ve mentioned at all here…

yeah, i’ve actually been quite busy in my silence, which is why i am silent… sort of a bad catch 22 – i’m so busy working on new art to post pics of the new pieces to get people interested in the art so i can keep doing new art….

(yeah, these are pretty much the same pics i’ve been using all over – i didn’t get many good ones of her while i was stressing out… )

and isn’t she cute in some clothes she stole from my monster high girls? she doesn’t fit all their shoes, but a fair number of them –

and more playing around

June 7th, 2015 by _d2_

this time also messed around with settings on my camera, but i think i’m going to go back to my original settings… and hope that kame stops coming out pink or green…

((and yes i *AM* working on getting a finished xiang cast and i’ve started sealing most of the mai ougi pieces for molding – i still have two more parts of her arms to finish))

playing around as avoid doing real work…

June 6th, 2015 by _d2_

just some random shots of kame in front of grey background… i had gotten some fake(read plastic) moss rocks at a dollar store as i start to collect fun things to use as photo-props… by themselves, they suck… or maybe i if i had a smaller doll they’d look better…

anyway – i hope to take some more pics later today and maybe post those up tomorrow or monday if i get anything good ^^

((yes, yes… i know – i’m in love with her back… but i just adore how the spine turned out and her little turtle tail! ))

i've been drawing for as long as i could hold a pencil and art became my first language. though i've only been sculpting since 2007, i fell in love with the idea of being able to bring my drawings to life. i am heavily inspired by medieval macabre artwork, japanese yokai, and oddly enough, sherlock holmes. currently i'm living just south of beautiful portland oregon ^^
