more mold pics

June 30th, 2014 by _d2_

yep, that’s right – i’m getting more of venetian sun into molds which is great!

and yes, that IS kung fu panda you spy in the background…. i like to watch cartoons while i work, it keeps me cheerful with the bright colors.

i also did a test cast of the torso and leg molds i already had done – and they WORKED! it’s such a huge relief!

look at that gorgeous sun! sure it needs some clean up work and what not, but it’s still better than having to sculpt identical pieces (which i’m not good at….)

oh, and i’ve got this guy mostly done too ~_^ i’m trying to decide whether or not to add some blue/purple into the shadows on the pink lace….

mold progress

June 28th, 2014 by _d2_

i’ve actually been getting quite a bit done today. i have another big batch of the venetian sun’s pieces being sealed, and i have the first batch of molds nearly done. her leg is all done, but the torso is only about halfway – i ended up doing a 4 part mold instead of a 3 part mold because i was really concerned about her torso getting stuck.

so various in progress pics -

and after the first pour -

after the second pour -

and here are her other parts -

i didn’t take a picture of it, but i’m actually just down to her leg and one lower arm to finish now – it’s those blasted joints! still haven’t gotten them quite right yet. sigh…. oh, and her mask ^^;;;;

oh, but here is the start of the lunar based mask for the black and silver version i’ll be doing for myself -

and in other news – eyes! so many eyes! but the first batch came out decently good – not perfect, but i’m sure i know how to fix them in the future batches.

these are the 8mm – the 14mm are still curing (i attempted to put domes on them but it didn’t work out.)

and the next batch – 11 pairs of 8mm and 14 pairs of 10mm eye bases (i’ve already started on the clean up of the 8mm bases)

eyes!

i was going to wait until i had some other pics as well, but i just HAD to share! i’m so happy with how they turned out!

this is one of the test pairs of 8mm eyes i made – they just look fantastic in kirin! who… i can see desperately needs some refining work done on her…. sometimes i overlook the little imperfections, but since she’s going to be cast in resin, i have to fix those.

the eyes out of the doll – they’re supposed to be brown with little pink bows on the side…. yeah, i know, they look more like blobs.

and in her – our monster high girl lost the wig permanently to this diva.

prepare for a deluge!

when a doll gives me this much attitude and sass while unfinished, i know they’re going to be a real card in front of the camera when all done!

okay – so technically it was my iphone, and so the pics are kinda blurry….

i need to really remember to use my camera for in progress pics too ><####

but, for the first time, i was able to test the entire venetian sun together! well, minus her feet….

speaking of which, her shoes are nearly complete! i’ve added some more detail – okay, rococo shoes don’t normally have a high back, but i needed something to act as a stop and visually it makes sense…

but now i’m just in the finishing sanding on one, and the final refining to match the other on the second shoe. yes, the second one *is* slightly larger, i’m working on getting it down to the correct size. sigh.

and her hands are nearly complete as well! molding is going to be interesting…. but i plan on drilling a hole through the mask holding right hand anyway -

and her arms – i’ve got the rays sculpted on the right shoulder as well now, and i’ve started on the elbow – i still have to do wrist sockets on both arms, but i wanted to check length against the body first to make sure i wasn’t making them too long or short.

and now for the fun part! i’ve gotten the first few pieces sprayed – i need them to finish drying before i can sand them. and spray again. and sand again, and so forth and so on….

but seeing her body together suddenly had me freaking out – it’s so HUGE and the legs are so LONG… would her head be too tiny now?

nope, i think actually it’s just the right size. trust me – i was really really REALLY freaking out because i love this head so much.

wait… can i call it a head?

and with the start of one mask – each version of her will have their own mask. it’s actually easier that way.

oh, i love this little girl so much!

and sitting with her feet…. shoes…. thingies…

the afore mentioned update pics

June 21st, 2014 by _d2_

just as i said, here are the updated pics of the venetian sun.

i’ve been adding detailing to her chest and neck because it was looking so… plain.

well, that and i had to widen her neck for the head to sit correctly. and she’s also go hands, and i’ve got one leg nearly done and the other one about halfway done. and i’ve got her arms going pretty well too. only thing that hasn’t changed *too* much is her shoes…. those are going slowly because i’ve never tried to sculpt fabric details before.

pardon the string – i was trying to do a test fitting, but found out her neck was drilled at the wrong angle so i had to fill that in and re-drill it. but i didn’t bother to remove the string from the holes in the neck balljoint.

and look! little hands! my mom had suggested putting the mask on a stick, and well, she’s going to have to have hands that can hold such a thing, right?

speaking of hands, here is a test fitting of the arm – i really like how it moves at this point. i won’t know for sure until i have it strung with elastic, though.

and, of course… her shoes….

return of a spirit

found a new trail in the woods near our house, and of course, out came kame!

it’s a bit of a break from all the in progress pics – though i have a bunch of those of the venetian sun i need to upload…

i apologize for her wig… while the yak hair is lovely and in scale, it… does not travel well and i haven’t remembered to brush it out since japan….

this girl is a chameleon – one moment sweet, the next she’ll suck out your soul and leave your body to the buzzards…

but she does seem to be in-tune with nature. funny, didn’t think turtles lived in forests…

and another update

June 15th, 2014 by _d2_

i’ve got two of amaterasu’s legs cast – but i broke one of the pieces, so i have to fix it once the flumo has hardened more.

but strung up with pipe cleaners – she looks pretty nice.

and on top of that i got some detail work on the sun as well.

first up working on smoothing out her face – sorry the pics are blurry

and then refining her torso and enlarging the sun emblem – it’s still quite rough, though.

and her back side got a bit of evening out.

about

i've been drawing for as long as i could hold a pencil and art became my first language. though i've only been sculpting since 2007, i fell in love with the idea of being able to bring my drawings to life. i am heavily inspired by medieval macabre artwork, japanese yokai, and oddly enough, sherlock holmes. currently i'm living just south of beautiful portland oregon ^^
