it’s been awhile

i know i’ve been quiet – my mom was just out and we spent a lot of time working together on a project for her. it was great, but i didn’t really get anything done on my own things….

however, i have started my dolls again and hoping to have pictures in the next week of what all i’ve been working on. i’ve finished the mold for saru’s head, and i’ve redone my eye molds. i’ve started on legs for amaterasu, which is nerve-wrecking because spider legs are so different from mammal legs.

random update #idon’tknow

actually, i’m making good strides! kirin is nearly ready to be painted – i’ve already started painting the gesso on her finished pieces, and i’ve decided to go with an aged leather look for her similar to what you see on venetian masks. i’ve started to experiment with crackle paint, but haven’t gotten it quite right….

i recently got a couple of memory boxes to keep my unfinished dolls in so i don’t keep mixing up their pieces.

this was my favorite crackle sample so far, but i think it’s too big…. i don’t want that much of the gold showing through.

with her head – i’m thinking of applying the crackle paint to only part of her head so that i don’t end up with huge fissures when i don’t want them.

and of course i’ve picked up otohime again in the meantime since there are times when all of kirin’s parts are wet and i can’t do anything. she’s got the start of her fishy tail, but sadly her little barbels broke off…. she looks like a duck now. sigh. but i’m nervous to try and resculpt them on and ruin her face… decisions, decisions….

what isn’t seen in the pics is that i’ve carved the frills on her gills.

and then an update on my boarcroc pic – he’s slowly coming along…. very slowly…. sigh.

sorry, no sculpt pics…

i’ve been working quite a bit on cleaning up kirin, but i haven’t taken any pics because outwardly, there’s no real change. a lot of it has to do with refining the fit of the joints, and it’s all internal fiddly stuff that, well, doesn’t make for very good pictures.

but good news is, i’m down to just one leg and her arms to finish – she’s about 80% done sculpted/finished, then comes the gessoing and painting, plus the wigging and figuring out clothing…. but the clothes will have to wait, she’ll just have to sit naked on the shelf next to kame, who is also naked.

in the meantime, i’ve been putting in time here and there on my next drawing, and let me tell you – this one is going to take me a lot longer to finish than any of my previous ones…. all the little nitty-gritty details are going to be murder on my hand, but it’s going to be awesome!

yes, he’s inspired by boarcroc, and my barely even started sculpt of boarcroc, and i know there are some…. freedoms i took with the anatomy and what not, but isn’t that what fantasy art is all about? though i can say looking at him now, his lower two front teeth need to be pulled forward a bit more to make room for those upper teeth…. sigh.

one more drawing update

i finished my lotus and have started working on my next piece inspired by the boarcroc sculpt i’ve put on the back burner while i work on other dolls.

but today i have a lot of mold making to do because we have gorgeous weather and i need to be outside to do the clean up for the plasterwork.

but if all goes well, then i’ll have arms molded for my own dolls! yay! that will help cut down on sculpting time, because then i can just modify the existing pieces to match whatever design i come up with.

i also plan on spending time on my current pieces as well, since i REALLY need to get kirin, otohime, and the venetian girl done….

and now for something completely random (again! )

i finally managed to grab an internet worthy super cute pic of one of my pets!

this is milou (named after tintin’s dog, of course) – he’s a world class sleeper, perhaps in part because he’s partially deaf. he’s so good that sometimes i have to shake him gently to make him wake up so as to be sure he’s still alive (in ferret ownership i have heard this referred to as SnD – “sleeping, not dead”)

some more 2D updating

with a rather stupid injury to my hand i’ve not been sculpting, but instead have been working on my latest drawing, and she’s about 95% completed! yay! and i should be back to sculpting tomorrow as well – so everything is going pretty well!

but here is my latest muse – yeah, i know she’s got problems, but i love her anyway!

no sculpting for awhile

i did something very stupid and injured my hand… so i’m having to keep it wrapped up most of the time, and when it’s not i’ve been working on my drawing because it doesn’t require the use of my thumb as much (and that’s the injured part…. )

but i’ve been getting further on my skull girl! see – looks a bit better, right?

about

i've been drawing for as long as i could hold a pencil and art became my first language. though i've only been sculpting since 2007, i fell in love with the idea of being able to bring my drawings to life. i am heavily inspired by medieval macabre artwork, japanese yokai, and oddly enough, sherlock holmes. currently i'm living just south of beautiful portland oregon ^^
