mental note to self…

i haven’t made a list in quite a long time of all the projects i need to finish, and i thought, what the heck, why not make one now? then when i’ve finished moving and i’m stuck at home freaking out about finding a new job i can work on things and get stuff off my list….

but i know it’s going to be a long one… i am so horrible about starting projects and then dropping them when i run out of time and energy. oh, to have a guaranteed income from my artwork then i could just purely focus on it! but to make my dreams happen i would need to be making about $50,000 a year between work and art profits. okay, it may not be that much to a lot of people, but it works out to about $4,200 a month (before taxes) luckily most of the jobs i’m looking at pay about 36,000 a year, so that just leaves me with needing another 14,000…

and what might my dreams be, you ask? of course i am filled with nothing but dreams – that’s probably a big part of the problem… but i would love to get myself a small farm (ideally between 1 and 5 acres) and have a nice cat retirement home set up…. of course this would be after doing some traveling for a few years. there’s some other stuff in there too, but those are the biggest ones for sure.

and to that list of things to finish? would you believe all of this? and these are JUST the one’s i’ve already started sculpting!

large doll sculpts : basil (needs head finished and new body), ronald (needs head finished and new body), boarcroc (everything needs to be finished), xenoceratops (needs everything to be finished), venus (needs head reworked and body finished), vegeta (everything needs to be finished)

large heads only : saru, lotus, skull girl all need to be finished, and i need to decide if i do plan on eventually making my own large body to go with them…

mini dolls sculpts : pierrot (it’s a never ending project getting her finished! ), jean-pierre (head and body need to be finished), plus ALL of those optional heads for pierrot / jean-pierre (xolotl, voodoo, beatrix, ect… )

mini OOAK : kame (finishing body), kirin (finishing body), amaterasu (everything)

tiny dolls : pip (finishing sanding and molding), cooper (reworking body) – plus making a new head for my beloved hollow…

and last, but not least, i need to finish all of my eye masters and various shoe mules/soles for several sizes.

it’s a lot to get done, but one good thing – our new house actually has 3 bedrooms, but we’re turning the largest bedroom (with a GORGEOUS view of the forest) into our craft room – and it will be big enough to fit two work desks – one for sewing/fabric crafts and one for my sculpting! having a dedicated place to work is going to really help i think – i’ve never had that before.

believe it or not

but not being able to sculpt is driving me NUTS! i have so many ideas, and when i go back thru my old pictures i get re-inspired. i can’t wait to finish this move and get back to work! i was looking back at super early pictures of pierrot and her body and realized i want to retry the first version i did with the hip balls attached to the lower body/waist – i really love that aesthetic and if other doll makers can do it, surely i can too?

i’m also thinking of trying to sculpt a doll similar in size to the monster high dolls so they can share things – i love their size and aesthetic (which is a no duh if you look at my past stuff) but i always though i’d be more into bigger dolls because that’s what i mostly collect…. and yet, when i’m sculpting they always end up so tiny and petite!

though i remember talking with my mom a few months back – she likes to collect the tiny dolls because that’s not what she sculpts herself… perhaps because i tend to not like sculpting the big ones that’s why i collect them? though i do have quite a few that i need to finish, that’s for sure!

but the days and weeks are counting down – the moving containers are set to be delivered december 23, and then we’re driving out to oregon december 30th. can you believe it, only three weeks left?!

now entering: the world of repaints!

as a creative person i’m always curious about new things, and as a collector i’m always looking for the next cool thing.

so for awhile now i’ve been collecting monster high dolls – they are really close to my aesthetic and they appeal to me in a way that the bjds don’t. not that i’m not wanting bjds anymore – i’m still looking forward to when i can start sculpting again – but i’m interested in a new venture of doll customizing. repaints!

so after looking up all sorts of amazing pictures and tutorials, i did my first attempt. in some ways, i’m very happy with the results, but i can also see all the little flaws (and in the case of her eyes, several very large flaws….) i had to change her eyes when i had a slip up on one side – it was heart wrenching…. but i think with some practice i can get the hang of it….

well, here is my photo timeline of what i did over the last few days. sadly, not all the pics are that great…but my victim is the dead tired spectra – my final plans for her involve styling her hair up into a geisha or maiko inspired hairstyle and a kimono of some sort…. it will be an interesting challenge because of the slender arched body of the monster high dolls which can easily be swallowed by layers of fabric…..

now i just hope i don’t end up being listed as one of those bad repainters….

i've been drawing for as long as i could hold a pencil and art became my first language. though i've only been sculpting since 2007, i fell in love with the idea of being able to bring my drawings to life. i am heavily inspired by medieval macabre artwork, japanese yokai, and oddly enough, sherlock holmes. currently i'm living just south of beautiful portland oregon ^^
