rising from the dead

working on hollow made me want to bring back to life beatrix – a mod of the original pierrot head that had a similar feel to hollow (i love those pouty lips and long roman noses, what can i say? )

i also started carving titania’s body while waiting to order the miliput – i then put her head and arms on to see the proportions – i think they’re nice. her head is far for even being started to be honest, though…

and just one for fun – several of the ladies of atelier macabre – pip, hollow, beatrix, and venus.

the week’s done –

and who would have thought i’d have gotten this far on hollow?

sure, she’s not really completed, but i also lost a day of work thanks to having to run a ton of errands and do a ton of chores…. growl….

but i’m still thrilled with her! i think i might be able to get her finished tomorrow – there’s not a whole lot of work left, but it’s all over her body so she doesn’t look as finished as she really is.

on a random note -

my puppy (*cough* 6 year old *cough*) toby was watching me sculpt mournfully – he rather dislikes the dolls and me sculpting because he can’t sit in my lap. and of course, the instant the camera was on him, he looked away innocently, but i do have to say i got his likeness quite well in my xolotl -

new project to get me working on the old

March 20th, 2011 by _d2_

yeah, i know, i’m crazy and need to finishing something first, but…. i’m not happy or inspired if i don’t have 5 things going at once.having recently become the mom to some amazing ferrets i’ve been avoiding my sculpting to play with fuzzies – bad me.

so i decided to try my hand at a project – sculpt a bjd in one week. not a perfect one, but a working one.i’ve named her hollow and she was inspired by one of my favorite songs, “the hollow” by a perfect circle – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_x7_5L3C4Q

if it works out, then this will be my next one – i’m calling her noir because…. um, no real reason. i like that word and i like the color black?

and here is the long over due sketch of titania and a second sketch i did to try and figure out her face – i’m going to sculpt a permanent gas mask on her face – she’s definitely my own baby.

another large picture update!

March 13th, 2011 by _d2_

i got to primer some of my pieces yesterday in the brief bit of sun – yay!

i also worked more on titania, in that she has arms and legs in the works! though i ran out of miliput…. i also made arms and a tail for pip out the miliput. hopefully next week when i get my paycheck i can pick up another box.

so without further ado, here are my blackened dolls! though the spray didn’t go on evenly (thank you wind :| ) and it does make the flaws more obvious….

and here is titania. i was curious and put pip’s head on the body before i added on the legs – i think it’s a good size, actually, which means i may make her head to wear a 4 inch wig like pip…. though i wanted her to have a smaller head… what to do, what to do…..

TONS of pictures!

where to begin……

well, the weather doesn’t like me because today it’s been raining and snowing. yes, both. sometimes at the same time. so i haven’t been able to spray the primer on any of my dolls….but here are some pics nonetheless.

first up – my new extremely stylized curvy girl that i’m tentatively naming “titania” – i’ll need to scan in my sketch for her tomorrow….

i’m sculpting her out of miliput because of her curves – and i’m mildly allergic to it so it’s a bit tough…

then there’s some mild updates with pip – been working on her other leg and foot, and i need to rework her knees…. her arm will also have to be sculpted out of miliput instead of paper clay because it keeps breaking!

next up is my dog head for the big body – not sure if he’ll be called anubis or baskerville (which i’m leaning more too – gee, wonder why…) or if i should figure out a totally new, non canine related name for him….

and then there are pics of basil – still working his leg. i want to get his knee good and stable on the one leg before i cut the other one apart – and since i’m on about the 5th version of the knee, i think it’s wise…..

and then there’s dear old xololt – this time she’s got her ears on! sadly i haven’t been able to do much on her because i need to primer her and cast parts…. so the poor thing has been sitting in the background, but i just squee-ed when i did the test stringing to determine which arm i like better (the older 2 part arm or new 3 part arm) – i like the new arm, so i need to sculpt her an elbow joint for that.

and lastly – a pic of my three sizes – xolotl, basil, and pip!

it’s official, i’m addicted to sculpting…. i haven’t finished one single doll and i’ve gone and started a new one!

she’s going to be a bit taller than pip, but along the same scale. i’m sculpting her out of miliput because of how delicate she’ll be.

i haven’t been neglecting my others, though! and this weekend i’m hoping to spray primer on most of the pieces so i can start the final sanding and smoothing. so excited!

i've been drawing for as long as i could hold a pencil and art became my first language. though i've only been sculpting since 2007, i fell in love with the idea of being able to bring my drawings to life. i am heavily inspired by medieval macabre artwork, japanese yokai, and oddly enough, sherlock holmes. currently i'm living just south of beautiful portland oregon ^^
